I agree with the article.

Swing is not dead but does need a radical face lift to catch up with the times. I have used skins with MyUniPortal and found it is a start but I want something more. I worked with JOGL and java 2D but you need more computing power as you head in that direction and there are examples but not quite what I would use for the desktop productivity app.

I have used SWT Browser, Ice Browser, JDIC and JDICPlus for a embedded browser over the last 10 years with MyUniPortal. Since development stopped on JDIC and JDICPlus and SWT Browser can not do the things mentioned in the article and run applets and maybe activeX controls I would say the best is to go with something commercial that can support all technologies like a browser and still get embedded in an app. I too am waiting to see JWebPane but with all the license issues not sure when we will see it or what technologies it will support.

Again, thanks for the great article!

"Swing isn’t dead, it just isn’t targeted to today’s designers." -: well said we need more designer friendy UI builders but what about the amount of memory swing takes even for a single JFRAME ??

I've heard rumblings about a Swing based browser being developed by Sun. Anyone know anything about a release target date? (or where we can read more about its proposed functionality)

The worst thing about Swing is that it’s too easy to use wrong. This is why, in my opinion, Swing has such a bad reputation.

I 100% agrees on this.JSR 296 is right step in that direction.Swing is most flexible UI toolkit currently,Just most do not know how to use it.
